The Seeds of Good Health are Planted in the Community of 13 de Febrero

This week on the mission field Yolanda held her first in a series of hygiene and sanitation training courses in a primary school in the community of 13 de Febrero.  This initial class was the result of many months of praying and planning and was a HUGE success!  Upon arrival on the morning of the 11th, the students got to work clearing out a classroom for Yolanda to present her materials.  This training class’s audience consisted of around 30 fifth and six grade students.  Yolanda would be presenting materials on how to properly wash hands and the basics of the contamination cycle.

These topics are vitally important in the war against disease.  According to the World Health Organization, diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in children under five years of age.  That’s around 760,000 children each year.  Most of these deaths are easily preventable by following basic hygiene and sanitation guidelines and by providing access to safe water, which is exactly what Yolanda is teaching and what we will be delivering.  As mentioned in earlier posts, all of our training materials are obtained from organizations that have researched and developed these curriculums over the years with excellent success.  If interested in the materials we use, feel free to contact us for more information.

After setting up the classroom with our custom color posters and handwashing station, Manny (our logistics coordinator) opened the class with a prayer to thank God for the opportunity to deliver these teachings.  For the next 35 minutes Yolanda shared the materials with the boys and girls through lecture, posters, and hands on demonstrations.  The children were very attentive and thankful.   At the completion of the training all the children were provided with soap to bring home to begin putting into practice what they had learned!

Following the training, the 5th and 6th grade teachers, Marco Antonio Rios and Samuel Rengifo, expressed their gratitude and welcomed the team back for the next set of training classes.  They also offered to help assist us in gathering the children and their parents so the materials can be presented to the family!  And if that wasn’t enough, they welcomed us to present a Gospel message to the group!  Praise Jesus!  Can you imagine that in the states?

This is just the beginning of the work we intend on doing in this village and the surrounding areas.  We are networking with other schools in remote areas to begin delivering the same training in more communities.  Alongside Yolanda and the hygiene training, Pastor Paulo is beginning to minister the gospel in the community.  This coming weekend, the 26th, Paulo will be teaching in the community on the purpose of the church.  Much more information to come shortly.

These components, the hygiene education and the Church planting/strengthening, will not only allow us to bring the gift of health, but opens the door to bring the spiritual healing offered only in the Savior, SO NONE WILL THIRST.

God Bless
